A Stolen Car Tied to an Earlier Gun Call Bolts East Across Buffalo and Into Cheektowaga, Officers Trailing on Taillights Alone

Just after midnight, Buffalo officers spotted a stolen SUV already linked to a daytime gun call and robbery, and spent six minutes chasing it block by block across the East Side — losing it, finding it, and finally handing it off toward Cheektowaga.

Just after 12:09 AM, a Buffalo officer radioed that he had a stolen car stopped in front of him — then, in the next breath, that it was gone: “In the room I've got a stolen car right in front of me. He's at the dash. Now he's running over the grass, south towards Sullivan” Within moments the vehicle was running over grass south toward Sullivan, and the officer reported it had taken off, apparently south on Herb toward Genesee.

The reason for the urgency came quickly over the air — “That vehicle was involved in a gun call and robbery earlier today” For the next several minutes the traffic was a scramble of fragmentary sightings: a westbound turn on Lang, taillights toward Springer, a white SUV weaving through the Kensington and Edison streets with officers calling out cross streets they could barely confirm.

One officer notified Cheektowaga that the vehicle appeared to be heading into their area, adding that he was not close and could only make out that it was a white SUV. The chase threaded north on Eggert toward Kensington before command, weighing whether the occupants were in fact the people from the earlier gun call, called it off. The scanner traffic did not establish whether the SUV was ultimately stopped before the thread closed.

RESOLVED

A Drone Finds a Man Who Walked Away From the Hospital, Pinning Him on the Railroad Tracks Off Route 16

Yesterday evening, Cattaraugus County deputies worked the dark fields near Sherlock Hollow with a drone overhead, talking searchers in on foot until a man who had absconded from the hospital was taken into custody — with a deep gash on his arm.

Yesterday at about 7:24 PM, Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies were working the railroad tracks near Sherlock Hollow off Route 16, searching for a man who had walked away from Olean General Hospital. A deputy with eyes on a drone offered to guide searchers in, and the aircraft's operator began calling out positions — the subject “The drone is directly over the pier. Somebody walking. They're about 30 meters east of the tracks they've stopped”

With the drone directly over the figure, deputies on the ground were steered east toward the tracks — “go straight east from right there” By 7:28 PM, dispatch reported one male in custody. A deputy said he would have the man aboard and headed back to the jail, and notified hospital security they would be en route with him.

As the scene settled, a deputy asked for an ambulance: the man had a bad gash on the back of his right arm and needed to be looked over. Hospital security, deputies said, would be faxing over paperwork to attach to the case report.

A One-Month-Old Bleeds From the Mouth After a Two-Car Crash on the 290, Then Steadies at the Scene

Yesterday afternoon, Amherst officers raced to an injury accident on the 290 eastbound just before Millersport where the patient was a one-month-old — the extent of the injuries unknown until a closer look showed only blood from the gums.

Yesterday at about 4:49 PM, Amherst police were sent for an injury accident on the 290 eastbound just before Millersport, a two-car crash with an alarming detail: the patient was a one-month-old, said to be injured, with the extent unknown.

Early word from the scene was ominous — dispatch relayed that the infant was “bleeding from the mouth” As officers worked out the fastest way onto the highway, a unit reaching the child reported the better news: “Alert and conscious. It was just some blood from the gums. It's been stopped”

A Small Gray Car Hits a Pole on Greiner, and a Caller Says a Man Was Beating the Bleeding Woman Behind the Wheel

Overnight, a crash into a pole on Greiner turned into something darker: a witness told dispatch a man had been choking and beating the woman driving, who was bleeding — and the car fled before officers arrived.

At about 1:02 AM, dispatch put out an accident with injury on Greiner near East Delavan that was not a routine crash. The vehicle, described as a small gray car, had struck a pole — and a caller said that inside it “a male choking and beating the female passenger”

Moments later, dispatch sharpened the account: “The driver of the accident stated that the male was beating the female while she was driving and she was bleeding” The car left the scene after the crash in an unknown direction. Officers who reached the pole found “nothing showing out here damage-wise” — nothing left but the report and two callers. The scanner traffic did not establish whether the vehicle or its occupants were located before the thread closed.

Cars acknowledged and were shown on location within minutes. The scanner traffic did not establish whether anyone was found with the SUV or what came of the threat before the thread closed.

A 13-Year-Old Reported Missing Since the Previous Morning Is Still Unaccounted For as Officers Take the Report

Yesterday evening, Buffalo officers stood at an East Side address to take a missing-person report — a 13-year-old last seen the morning before, more than a day gone.

Yesterday at about 7:29 PM, officers on Buffalo's East Side radioed in from an address where a family member had reported a child missing. As dispatch logged it: “There's a female missing, 13-year-old, missing at 9:30 a.m. yesterday”

By the time officers arrived, the juvenile had been gone roughly a day and a half. The scanner traffic did not establish whether the child was located before the thread closed.

A Trooper Rolls Up on a Stray and Radios for a “Pedal to Her Car Seat”

A found-dog call gets the full plate-and-paperwork treatment on the Thruway.

Yesterday at about 10:13 PM, a Thruway trooper cleared a traffic stop and promptly stumbled onto something else entirely out near the 370-over-7 mark. “I rolled up on a DB. She's bound. She's going to need a pedal to her car seat” He even had a plate to run — out of New Jersey — and dispatch logged the whole thing as an event number at 2214, radio cadence intact for an occupant count of “Just the one” The dog, one assumes, did not provide a date of birth.

“Eighty Off, Eighty-Two On, Good Evening”

A shift-change courtesy slips onto the air between the clearing cars.

Yesterday at about 6:33 PM, amid the routine Hamburg clutter of stations clearing and cars going to channel 6, one dispatcher handed off to the next with the small, human ceremony of a shift change, broadcast plain for anyone listening: “Eighty off, eighty-two on, good evening” The watch rolls over; the radio keeps its manners.

A Dispatcher Feels the Crash Coming Before the Call Does

“Turn around, we got an accident here and I'm feeling it.”

Yesterday at about 5:52 PM, a Hamburg fire dispatcher cut into a routine training note to wave two Boston units back around: “Boston 7-1, Boston 7-2, turn around, we got an accident here and I'm feeling it” A minute later the formal tone followed — an auto accident with injuries at Boston State and Umphalia, two ambulances requested. The gut, it seems, keys up faster than the 911 line.

An administrative check unfolds with the cadence of a ritual.

A few minutes after midnight, the Thruway channel filled not with wrecks but with arithmetic — a long, formal roll call of patrol numbers and posts read back and forth, opened by the solemn-sounding “New York State's Airway Authority, KRX 385, Buffalo 12 State, please patrol standby to acknowledge” It is the overnight liturgy of a state radio net: no drama, just the steady telling of a bead of numbers to prove everyone is where they should be.

Editor’s Note

A steady overnight mix of routine Amherst and Buffalo EMS traffic — falls, chest pains, difficulty breathing — was punctuated by a handful of harder runs. A Butler Street second-alarm fire gutted the upper floors of a frame house on Buffalo's East Side, a man shot himself in the backyard of a Melrose address at dawn, and a late-night fire forced an evacuation at the Gowanda nursing home in Cattaraugus County. Threaded through the long parade of medical calls were a stolen car that touched off a cross-city pursuit into Cheektowaga, a drone-assisted search along railroad tracks in Cattaraugus County, and a one-month-old bleeding from the mouth after a crash on the 290.
