A Cattaraugus Deputy's Overnight Pursuit Tops 100 MPH and Ends With a Driver Ramming a State Trooper Before Capture

A light-blue Ford pickup loaded down and listing heavy fled east on I-86 late last night, then threaded off-ramps and back roads through Hinsdale and Cuba before deputies and State Police boxed it in.

Late yesterday evening, just after 11:00 PM, a Cattaraugus County deputy got behind a vehicle failing to yield eastbound on I-86 near the Hinsdale town line, radioing it was running “about 90 miles an hour”. The truck was a light-blue Ford F-150, the deputy said — “it's almost like a baby blue” — with a load strapped into the bed that looked like a refrigerator, and dispatch began reaching out to Allegany County as the chase crossed toward it.

Speeds climbed with the traffic light to none: the deputy twice called “106 miles an hour, 106”. The pickup got off at Hinsdale and ran north on Route 16, then east, then wound south through the town of Cuba on Route 305, the deputy holding roughly a quarter-mile back and narrating the danger — “I almost lost it on a curve”, he radioed on one curve, and the overloaded truck was “having major weight issues”, listing lopsided as it ran.

The thread ran through Clarksville and a one-lane bridge as a loose tail stayed on the truck. By the overnight's end the F-150 had rammed a State Police vehicle and the driver was apprehended, with no injuries broadcast to the pursuing units.

An Armed Man Refuses to Leave a Westfield-Area Home, Making Threats; Deputies Secure the Scene and the Weapon

A caller watching from a red pickup across the street reported a man refusing to leave a Jones Road residence and threatening the people inside, with a long rifle later observed before the subject was taken into custody.

Just before 11:00 PM last night, Chautauqua County dispatch sent units to 8518 Jones Road in the Westfield area, near Sherman Road and Parker Road, for a man — identified on the air as Marcus Dettweiler — allegedly refusing to leave and “making threats towards several subjects there at the residence”. The caller had pulled across the street and was watching from a red F-150 as deputies headed in.

A deputy relayed that “in the past, the caller has known him to carry a handgun and a pocketknife”, though it could not be confirmed on scene at that moment. Over the next half hour deputies reported an armed subject inside with a long rifle observed, ran emergency traffic, and then marked the subjects secured with the weapon taken into custody — the standoff ending without reported injury.

Buffalo Firefighters Chase Fire Into Roofline at Rosedale Street Blaze

Just after 12:30 AM, Buffalo Fire companies were on scene at 3 Rosedale — fireground radio corrected an initial address given as "Forest Island" to the Rosedale location — for a structure fire; within minutes a truck officer reported the bulk of the fire knocked down on the exterior as crews began checking for extension into the building.

Crews pushed through the building floor by floor — the first floor was called clear and searchers moved to the second — while radio traffic turned to the roofline, where a truck officer reported fire visible in the roof and another crew said they had no access to the attic through an opened ceiling, working with a hand light while trying to cut their way in.

A chief designated "Rosdell Command" arrived to take the incident roughly nine minutes in, reporting the bulk of the fire knocked down but "a little fire that made it up into the roofline," with crews still working to gain access; dispatch advised command the fire had passed the 15-minute mark as a second truck company was held in staging and told not to act until ordered.

Editor’s Note

A busy overnight across Western New York turned on two moments of real danger far from the home zone: a Cattaraugus County sheriff's pursuit that topped 100 miles an hour and ended with a driver ramming a State Police cruiser before capture, and an armed-subject standoff near Westfield that was secured without anyone hurt. Closer in, a Lovejoy Street domestic in Cheektowaga escalated to a bleeding victim and a gun in the home, a worker was impaled knee-to-foot on a steel pole in a Greiner Road industrial accident, and Jamestown police searched overnight for a missing ninth-grader. Domestic-violence calls clustered through the evening, two working structure fires lit the small hours, and Niagara County stayed notably quiet.
