Around the Neighborhood

Williamsville / Amherst — 06:09 a.m.

Multi-Vehicle Crash on the 290 East at the 990 Snarls the Morning Drive; One Driver Transported

A pre-rush wreck on the eastbound 290 bottlenecks Amherst right where the 990 meets it.

Amherst Fire dispatched the first call at 06:09 as a single-vehicle accident on the 290 eastbound underneath the 990 with unknown injuries.[1] Within seconds calls were stacking up — Amherst PD was telling dispatch "multi-vehicle accident, we're getting a lot of calls on it," with at least one vehicle spun out in the roadway.[2] By 06:21 PD was reporting four sections of damaged guardrail in the center,[3] and by 06:35 an officer announced "United has its 290 completely reopened; I'll be transporting this driver to the Sheridan/Sweet Home."[4] Ellicott Creek Fire investigators were still working a separate audible-alarm call in the neighborhood as the highway cleared.[5]

Eggertsville — 18:54 last night

Three Cars, One Whole Foods Parking Lot: Amherst Fire Treats a Trio of Crashes at 3139 Sheridan Drive

Dispatch logs it as a single accident, then revises — three vehicles, one lot, one patient with back pain.

At 18:54 Amherst Fire put it out as an Eggertsville motor vehicle accident at 3139 Sheridan Drive.[6] A minute later the call expanded: "three accidents in the parking lot of the Whole Foods, 3139 Sheridan Drive — we've got the fire department responding for back pain."[7] Crews cleared in under fifteen minutes with no damage to extinguishers used and no further injury complaints reported on the channel.[8]

Amherst — 15:32 yesterday

Earlier 290 Pileup Pulls a Second Twin City Ambulance to the Main Street Exit

Three vehicles, six being evaluated, Rescue 5 staged behind 9-2-3.

Yesterday afternoon's MVA on the 290 hit at 15:32 with Amherst Fire announcing a motor vehicle accident on the 290.[9] A fire-side update at 15:40 expanded the scene: "three vehicles also involved in that" with a second cluster of vehicles 200 yards to the east, prompting Amherst Fire to request a second Twin City Ambulance.[10][11] Patients were entered through the Main Street exit; the on-scene supervisor reported evaluating three with three more still being worked.[12]

Amherst — 02:50 a.m.

Orange-Shirted Man Spends the Small Hours Screaming in the 7-Eleven Parking Lot at 2139 Niagara Falls Boulevard

Other party departs in an unknown vehicle in an unknown direction before patrol arrives.

Amherst PD dispatched at 02:50: "7-Eleven, 2139 Niagara Falls Boulevard. A male subject in an orange shirt, screaming and swearing at another male in the lot who has since left in an unknown vehicle in an unknown direction."[13] No further detail crossed the channel beyond a checkback at 02:51.[14]

Overheard: The Wires

Buffalo — 15:11 yesterday

Buffalo Fire Rolls Up Four Flights for — and We Cannot Stress This Enough — Burnt Popcorn

BFD Ch1 dispatch took the call cold and crisp at 15:11: "Firm popcorn on the floor … can't handle it for long."[15] Six seconds later the dispatcher clarified for everyone keying up to ask: "Dispatch 4-3, that was burnt popcorn on the fourth floor."[16] Engine 2 was assigned to handle. Truck was instructed to give a report. The microwave was, presumably, retired with honors.

Akron — 02:12 a.m.

Akron EMS Toned Out at Two in the Morning for — Don't Look at the Address — Perry's Ice Cream, 1 Ice Cream Plaza

Amherst Fire Dispatch handed Akron EMS the call at 02:12: "Akron EMS, Perry's Ice Cream, 1 Ice Cream Plaza, Cedar Street … 33-year-old female."[17] The patient was transported with no disposition reported. The street name is real. The plaza name is real. We checked twice.

Sports Venues / HMS Security — 19:10 last night

Golf-Cart Engines Set Off a Carbon-Monoxide Alarm Inside the Venue; Security Sounds Mildly Annoyed

HMS Security keyed up at 19:10 with a phrase that any building engineer will recognize as a long sigh in radio form: "the gas engines on their carts setting off the carbon monoxide alarm."[18] Twenty-eight minutes later the same channel was reporting "Kitchen area 2A, A1.29 — there's a bunch of water on the floor inside the kitchen," a separate but spiritually similar entry in the night's catalog of small malfunctions.[19]

West Seneca / W Seneca Schools radio — 17:06 yesterday

An All-Points-Notice from a School Bus Dispatcher: One of Linda Otto's Chickens Has Escaped — Please Notify Linda

From the West Seneca CSD school-bus channel at 17:06, delivered with the calm of someone reporting a route delay: "Call Linda Otto and let her know one of her chickens just escaped."[20] No follow-up was broadcast. The chicken's status as of press time is unknown. Linda, if you're reading this, the bus driver tried.

BNIA Delta Ramp — 17:24 yesterday

Two BNIA Ramp Agents Have an Entire Relationship on Channel Inside of Eleven Seconds

Delta Ramp at 17:23: "Can you get a moment? Can you call me?""Yes, ma'am""I know you sound tired, kiddo.""I'm over it, Mary.""Nah, we're good up here.""Deep breath."[21] The ramp was about to go on weather hold for lightning forty-five minutes later;[22] the deep breath, in retrospect, was well-timed.

FRS 16 — 21:02 last night

A Family Radio Service Conversation Drops a Line That Belongs on a T-shirt

Caught on the half-watt FRS-16 channel at 21:02, mid-conversation, no context, no follow-up: "Next thing you know, you'll be dead."[23] Sixteen seconds later a second voice on the same channel added "… cars when they talk,"[24] which somehow makes the first transmission worse rather than better. FRS is good for about a mile and these are by definition neighbors. Sleep tight.

Amherst PD — 15:36 yesterday

A Williamsville Man Spends His Wednesday Afternoon Trying to Spring a Car He Bought from Arizona

From the Amherst PD channel at 15:36, the kind of complaint that becomes a whole afternoon: "He's having trouble getting a vehicle released that he bought from Arizona."[25] Clint was waiting in a truck with a trailer.[26] We hope Clint was paid in cash and patience.

Editor's Note

A working night, but quieter than the firework of recent weeks. The 290 had two motor-vehicle calls bookending the window — an afternoon multi-vehicle wreck that pulled a second Twin City ambulance and a daybreak repeat under the 990 that closed lanes through the morning commute. Buffalo Fire spent the small hours opening up a second-floor working fire on 14th Street with crews warning each other about holes in the floor. Outside the news ledger, the day belonged to the absurd: burnt popcorn on the fourth floor, an Akron EMS call to Perry's Ice Cream at one Ice Cream Plaza, and a West Seneca bus dispatcher tracking a fugitive chicken. No Tier-Alpha hits, no owned-property mentions.
