The WNY Listening Post

Saturday, May 2, 2026  ·  P.M. Edition  ·  Window 02:47 → 14:47
Eyes on the wires. Ears to the radio. Twelve hours, fully reported.
Overheard: The Wires
What the…?!

Bovine Roadblock Stops Traffic Cold[1]

06:31  ·  Simulcast / Operations

One Operations dispatcher delivered the line of the morning, and arguably the line of the day: “Cows are blocked on both sides.” No follow-up traffic accompanied the transmission, leaving the cattle’s fate, jurisdiction, and direction of travel entirely to the listener’s imagination. The Listening Post asks: blocked by what? Blocked from what? We may never know.

“Picking Up The Virus”[2]

12:15  ·  Schools (Erie) / GI Central (Grand Island)

A driver on the Grand Island Central school channel announced, with no apparent irony, “I’m just going to pick up. I’m picking up the virus.” Seconds later, the same voice clarified the broader situation regarding a colleague: “He doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going.” Listeners are left to infer (with appropriate hedging) that “the virus” refers to a sick child or a sick co-worker, not a digital pathogen. Either reading is unsettling.

Chicago Connection: A Foot Pursuit—Of Passengers[3]

05:19–05:20  ·  BNIA / American Ramp

For roughly thirty seconds before sunrise, an American Airlines ramp coordinator narrated a slow-motion airport drama: “My pilot said he wants to wait until D-8… They’re almost to you… They’re at the restaurant… It’s a long walk… Yeah, the last two for Chicago just went running past the restaurant.” Translation, based on the radio chatter: two would-be Chicago passengers were sprinting through the terminal as gate agents weighed whether to hold the plane. No word on whether they made it.

Niagara Falls Tower Charts A Course—To Mars[4]

12:13  ·  NF Intl Airport / ATIS U

The recorded ATIS U broadcast at Niagara Falls Intl. produced a gem of automated nonsense: “There’s a approach to use that runway 2A, runway 2B, runway 2A to Mars.” Pilots planning interplanetary departures are advised to monitor the tower closely. (Whisper transcription artifact suspected. [unclear transcript])

The Mystery Of “Blaine’s Issue”[5]

13:59  ·  Site 1 / Maintenance

Late in the window, a Maintenance technician keyed up with the cryptic and somehow ominous: “508, Blaine’s issue.” No further context. The Listening Post can confirm only that 508 is presumably a unit number and that Blaine is presumably a person. Whatever Blaine’s issue is, it appears to remain unresolved at press time.

Color Alarm: It Is Not Green In Here[6]

08:50  ·  Businesses / WGM Sec

A WGM Security operator reported, somewhat poetically: “…but it makes a loud switch of colors, and it is not green in here.” The transmission appears to describe a status panel flipping from a calmer indicator to something less calm. We hope someone gets it back to green.

Pilot Self-Assessment Of The Day[7]

05:54  ·  BNIA / Buffalo Arrival-Departure

Brief but evocative, from a voice on the BNIA approach frequency: “I’m pretty too heavy.” Aerodynamically and grammatically equivalent.

Regional Blotter
  • Grand Island — Standing Fall, Possible Fracture. GIFC dispatched a Level-1 EMS response between Industrial Drive and Alt Boulevard for a 67-year-old male who fell from a standing position with a possible fractured leg.[8]
  • Lakewood Park — Boater’s Advisory. Marine 22A-1022 broadcast a notice of increased sailing activity north of Lakewood Park before and after scheduled races.[9]
  • Tonawanda — Welfare Check, Pre-Notified. Tonawanda FD dispatch advised a responding crew that “the resident on location there does know that you are responding,” a phrasing more often heard on welfare and assist calls.[10]
